Chances are when you were a kid, you had a wood deck. It may have opened from the kitchen, dining room, or family room, but it was probably a plain rectangle with a couple deck chairs and the barbecue. Your dad 
held forth on Memorial Day, Father's Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day weekend as he cooked hot dogs and burgers. When finished, everything got put on a platter and hauled back into the house where you gathered around the dining room table. A lot has changed in the last 25 years.
Decker custom decks, once exclusively built of pine, fir, or redwood and occasionally upholstered in Astroturf, are now being built in multiple levels, of a variety of engineered materials in addition to wood. In fact, some of the new materials are a composite of wood and recycled plastics. They are highly durable, look like painted wood, and provide low maintenance for years because they aren't susceptible to problems common to wood such as termites, dry rot, or splitting. That old deck of yesteryear is transformed now into the new Decker outdoor family room, entertainment space, or full-blown kitchen.
