Construction begins on the new deck.  The holes have
been dug and now the treated 4x4 posts are being set.
Treated 2x6 floor joists are attached to treated 2x8
rim joists to form the floor system for the deck.
Joist hangers give extra support where the floor
joists are nailed to the center joists and rim joists.
Galvanized carriage bolts are used to
attach the floor joists to the posts.
The main floor framing is complete while work continues on
framing the benches and stairs.  Most deck frames, or "skeletons",
are built from treated wood.  These skeletons can be covered by
many different decking "skins", like treated wood, red cedar,
exotic woods, vinyl or composite decking.
Tom and Maria wanted to use decking materials that would match the color pallet of
their home and would require very little maintenance.  They chose the combination
of composite decking and a vinyl railing system.  Composite decking covers the deck
floor, built-in bench seats and stair treads while matching  composite fascia is used
to trim out the rim joists and stair risers.  And while building a deck with composite
materials does require a larger initial investment, these materials save the owners
time and money over the lifetime of the deck.  Composite decking requires far less
maintenance and will last longer than natural treated wood decking.
With close to 250 square feet of space on this 14' x 18' deck, there
will be plenty of room for relaxation, entertaining and barbecues.
The railing system is taking shape.  Vinyl sleeves slide
over the treated wood posts to provide a brilliant finished
look while maintaining strength and structural integrity.
Two six foot wide stairways will provide easy
transitions from the deck to the back yard.
Composite lattice skirting provides the finishing touch that completes this durable and
attractive deck.  Give Marshall Contracting a call today and tell us what we can build for you!
Here's a picture of a play tower that one of our favorite customers
had us construct for their grandkids.  He showed us a picture of a
structure he had seen but wanted modified to his specifications.
We were more than happy to oblige.  This structure was built of
pressure treated pine lumber, but it can also be constructed of
cedar or composite material as well.  The tower is six feet wide,
six feet deep and stands twelve feet high to the peak.  The ground
floor has been framed in for a future sand box.  The second floor,
which is five feet above ground level, is accessible by a climbing
bridge and escapable by way of a ten foot long slide on the other
side.  And the roof, covered with 3 in 1 asphalt shingles, provides
shade and shelter during the long summer days.  When paired up
with the existing swing set the owners already had in their back
yard, this tower stands ready and waiting to be climbed over and
under and through all summer long for many years and happy
playtimes to come!  Contact us today about constructing the
outdoor recreation area you have in mind.
